Star removal and putting them back again

I have been using Autointegrate for some time with SLOOH and now my Seestar images. I see a lot of people using star removal before stretching and then combining them back after. I currently have BlurXterminator but not StarXterminator. I am also told that Siril allows you to remove stars but before I switch and try to learn Siril I want to ask:

How do I remove stars and then put them back in Autointegrate? I have searched but don’t understand what I have found.

To paraphrase “Galaxy Quest” “explain as you would to a 5 year old” being that I am 73 and a bit slow with some things.

Hi Jeff,

AutoIntegrate can remove stars and add them back automatically. To remove stars you need to have StarXTerminator (highly recommended) or StarNet2 (should work with AutoIntegrate but have not tried for some time).

In AutoIntegrate there are three options when to remove stars:

  • Remove stars from channels
  • Remove stars before stretch
  • Remove stars after stretch

I have described some details of each option here: AutoIntegrate Info

Those options are listed in the Postprocessing tab in the Star stretching and removing section.

To remove stars you need to do the following steps:

  1. In the Settings tab in the Tools section you need to choose either StarXTerminator or StarNet2 for star removal.
  2. In the Postprocessing tab in the Star stretching and removing section you need to select when to remove stars.

Then you can process your image normally. In the end you will have three images.

  • AutoRGB has stars being added back.
  • AutoRGB_starless is an image without stars.
  • AutoRGB_stars is the star image.

In the Postprocessing tab in the Star stretching and removing section there are some other options you may want to try but I suggest that you start with the defaults.

Jarmo
